The chapter started a kid’s fishing day in Cave Spring in 1987.

With an average attendance of about 400 children and after more than 35 fishing events, thousands of kids have grown up having experienced catching trout and knowing about TU.

The chapter now has had a Veterans Fishing Day for 11 years.

Vets Fishing Day occurs in Cave Spring, and all vets of all wars as well as active military, are invited to Rolater Park to catch a trout, take their minds off their troubles and learn to fly fish. We have recently added fly fishing for Women’s Day. Both are held on the same day, with the veterans starting at 10 am through noon and women starting at 1 pm through 3 pm. Women fly fishers have been the fastest-growing new member group in the country, and we at the Coosa Valley chapter want to encourage women of all ages to join and participate.

The Coosa Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, “ CVCTU,” does much more than teach kids and veterans to fish.

CVCTU has been a benefactor of the Arrowhead Environmental Education Center on Floyd Springs Road. The center has limited its hours and soon should have a new person in charge.

CVCTU, along with the Oconee chapter, established a scholarship endowment at the Warnell School of Forestry at the University of Georgia. It is fully funded and generates scholarships.

CVCTU joined with the Georgia Council of TU and has now established a research grant endowment that has not quite reached full funding but is growing steadily.

CVCTU has also assisted the Rome Floyd Eco-center in funding the construction of an indoor trout stream and an interactive display about trout and Trout Unlimited

CVCTU sponsors kids between 13 and 15 for trout camp in northeast Georgia annually.

At trout camp, the kids learn all about trout, their habitat, and their food. They participate in a stream enhancement project and a fish stocking and learn to fly fish and tie flies.

CVCTU volunteers participate in stream enhancement projects on several area streams.

Johns Creek in Floyd County, Mountaintown Creek in Gilmer County, Holly Creek, Rock Creek and Goldmine Branch in Murray County, Little Cedar Creek in Cave Spring, and Raccoon Creek in Paulding County have seen hundreds of man-hours of labor spent improving these places for fish and fishermen.

The Coosa Valley also partners with other chapters on streams across the state.
